Captain Elaina Sartell Redesign: concept art

The Spelljammer campaign setting is one of my favourite settings with many positive memorys attached from mine and my friends home game.
So when I learnt that the Neverwinter MMO was adapting it I spent the better part of two months making my way through the main game to get to the module and though I haven’t finished the campaign I was incredibly disappointed in how they redesigned one of my favourite characters from the setting, captain Elaina Sartell so I decided that I was going to redesign her myself to prove a point.
This began as a personal summer project but I decided to also use this project as my second term portfolio piece where I would tweek her redesign and create a 3d model of her!

A google slides covering my goals and opinions of her original design and her neverwinter redesign (The google slides also contains my modelling process if that’s something you are interested in)

A version in red but I opted for the blue as I thought the red drowned out the rose insignia on the sheath

my original final design I was happy with it for a time, but when I began using it for uni I was told to take another look at my references and the design

I initially attempted to do the redesign like this, but I quickly figured out that it was a poor and confusing way to go about it

My first redraft adding some more detail to her clothing and coat was the main priority

my second redraft where I attempted to make things less symmetrical though I didn’t do the best job at it only making minor tweeks initially

I also drew the backs of the outfits, most important for the coat details

I reduced both designs back to their silhouette to better figure out what to change without getting caught up in the minute details

I tweaked and changed parts of the design notably the hair

i created a lined version of the design so I would have a reference for the 3d model (will be in another post)
